ReGAIN has just learned from two reliable sources that a young man has brought sexual abuse charges against another Legionary of Christ. It seems that the offense took place at the Legion’s Apostolic School in France about ten years ago. Details are still sketchy. We can state that the accusation is presently being reviewed in French civil court to see if it meets the requirement to open a case ; the alleged perpetrator would be a Legion consecrated religious who at the time was a teacher/superior at the infamous junior seminary.
There is a referral in the French language WIKIPEDIA to two Legionaries previously being convicted of sexual assault at the school in the same time frame.
Putting the pieces together: this member of the Legion of Christ religious congregation (with religious vow), then a seminarian in training, is being accused of sexually abusing a minor under his pastoral care. Brother X would then have continued his “training” (Remember Fr. Maciel’s ghost-(Gonzalo Miranda LC?) written bestseller, The Integral Formation of the Priest! ), and was later ordained to the Catholic priesthood in the Legion. One source affirms that after ordination, now Fr. X was sent back to the same junior seminary (students are High School age) to continue teaching or as a formator. A few years ago, Fr. X left -or was asked to leave- the LC and transitioned to the diocesan priesthood where he continued to minister to Catholic families. Another case of the Legion of Christ unloading a problematic priest on an unsuspecting bishop?
ReGAIN’s criticism points, not so much to this individual accused of sexual abuse of a minor, but to the lack of responsibility = Ethics of Legion superiors and leadership cadre. The case opens a Pandora’s box of questions:
What outreach to victims?
What spiritual guidance, pastoral counseling, compensation offered to victims?
What psychological and pastoral help to the offender? Pastoral care, psychological treatment by trained therapists – not by in-home personnel ?
What steps to prevent recurrence? Just ignore the problem, pass it on, get rid of him, unload him on a diocese?
Information is hard to come by; perhaps the French court has put a gag order in place to prevent the victim’s name being made public and/or the whole case may be gagged while investigations are underway.
Let’s see how effective is the Legion of Christ’s damage control.

Addict, Idol and Cult Member: Reflections on the Loss of Self: A Phenomenological Examination of Destructive Cult groups
Tate Wood, Allen
My paper and talk are a phenomenological morphology of religious and political extremism. In the presentation, I give a detailed exposition of seven key elements that are present in the mind of the successfully indoctrinated group member. These seven elements include: absolute leader, absolute teaching, hierarchical social structure, the psychology of the adversary, the ends justify the means as a modus operandi, crisis psychology and the inner circle. The second part of my presentation includes an examination of the variables at play during the process of recruitment and indoctrination: milieu control, communication web/the manipulation of intimacy, peak experiences and planned spontaneity, the splitting phenomenon: the experience of evil, metaphor and ritual: the binding chains, the repudiation of the conscience, the rejection of the critical faculties and the colonization of the imagination understood as an experience of god. My remarks will be punctuated by anecdotal material from my life in the Unification Church including my direct contact with Sun Myung Moon. In addition, I shall be drawing on my 27 years as an addiction counselor working with alcoholics and addicts in county jails and state prisons.
Chile to deport Irish-born priest convicted of sexual assault
Friday 21 August 2015 22.24
The Chilean government has decided to deport an Irish priest who was convicted last year of sexually abusing a young girl, according to the Chilean interior ministry.
John O’Reilly was sentenced to four years’ probation in November for repeatedly molesting the girl from the time she was five.
The abuse took place from 2010 to 2012 at an exclusive school where O’Reilly was the spiritual advisor at the time.la
The interior ministry said it was revoking O’Reilly’s permanent residency and that he would have to leave the country after completing his sentence in 2018.
The decision can be appealed to the Supreme Court.
O’Reilly, 69, was once an influential figure in Chile as the local head of the Catholic Church’s ultra-conservative Legion of Christ order.
He arrived in Chile in 1984 and was granted citizenship in 2008 – but had it revoked in March by Congress.
The Legion of Christ has been beset by accusations of sexual abuse.
The order’s founder, Mexican-born Marcial Maciel, stepped down in 2005 amid allegations of pedophilia and fathering several children. He died in 2008.
THIS RAISES THE SPECTRE OF
INTER-GENERATIONAL PEDOPHILIA IN THE LEGION OF CHRIST RELIGIOUS ORDER
in other words; whether Fr. O’Reilly was a victim of Fr. Maciel (who favored him with an important mission in Chile which would bring fame and power to Fr. O’Reilly). The victim might identify with the predator and become a predator in turn. This phenomenon would seem to be born out by the case of Legionary priest, Fr. William (Guillermo) Izquierdo, an early Maciel recruit, born in the Canary Islands, who was abused by Maciel and would in turn abuse novices in Ireland as Novice Master. Quite possibly one of Fr. Izquierdo’s victims became a predator…
