Formal Legion Decree Regarding Maciel

We Can No Longer See Him As A Model Of Christian And Priestly Life
On December 6 Legion General Director Fr. Alvaro Corcuera issued a formal decree for the Legionaries of Christ and the consecrated women of Regnum Christi regarding the institutional position relating to their founder, Fr. Marcial Maciel.

After meeting with Legion officials and meditating before God, then obtaining approval from Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, Fr. Corcuera has issued a formal statement regarding their founder, acknowledging that “we can not see him as a model of Christian and priestly life.

Although Fr. Maciel’s pictures are no longer to be publicly displayed in Legionary or Regnum Christi centers, there are provisions that allow for those who choose privately to keep pictures of him or to listen to his talks to choose to do this. His writings may be used in preaching provided that he is not mentioned as the author.

The New York Times has reported that images of its disgraced founder must be removed from its buildings worldwide as part of Vatican-mandated reforms. To see this articleClick Here

ReGAIN Comment: Although we are pleased to see that Fr. Corcuera has (rather belatedly) come to a conclusion that most people reached long ago, ReGAIN is concerned that the door has been left open for devout Macielists behind closed doors to continue cult-like hero worship of a person who has been found by the Vatican to be without scruples and devoid of authentic religious sentiment.
